What I will do this summer: Pursue the elusive Hesperia Columbia
Girl: The columbian skipper butterfly! Frazz: Um...those don't live around here. Girl: I know. Frazz: Is your family taking a vacation out west? Girl: If the little ploy works.

Here in Hinesville, GA they have less than a month before school starts. They’d better get started on what they’re going to do.

Here in the wise state of Michigan, it is actually against the law to start school until after Labor Day…..It has brought a LOT of money from tourism into the public and private coffers….Critics of so much time off in the summer always say that the model was designed for agricultural times and isn’t needed anymore…The kids don’t have to tend the farm like they used to…Well, who do you think is selling all those T-shirts, drinks, and souvenirs, to make money, at family owned businesses…?….. I now call it the tourism model, and it’s bringing the state and local businesses so much money, it’s kind of silly……..Of course, we live in Michigan….There really are a lot interesting things to see and do……That does make a difference….

Here in that largest school district in the Golden State we shifted from year-round calendars (60 days on/30 days off) to early start (8/11 this year). The main rationale was to have the first semester end at the start of Winter break, eliminating a 3-week vacation & forgetting of lessons before Finals. The school year ends in early June. Of course, we still have to deal with non-functioning AC during most of August, adjustments or not.
