Wholesale market time in the summer and fall was the best time when I was working at a produce store. I got to try fruit that I never saw on sale anywhere or could never afford without the hefty discount. The only downside was the farm hands manning the stock were often filthy and occasionally of questionable health.
Most of the stuff you don’t want to eat is sealed into the fruits and veggies by the waxes used to prolong shelf life, and the waxes prevent the growth of most fungi and bacteria. One of the fun aspects of the job was peeling off the occasional giant bugs that got stuck during waxing. Even the bugs were perfectly preserved despite being boxed for 1-11 months.
