Tom: Listen, Huey, you have to try to understand how sensitive Jazmine is about her hair. She sees her mother's hair and she doesn't understand why her hair doesn't look the same way. My wife doesn't have a clue what to do with it, and neither do I. Meanwhile, we've tried everything to straighten it. Every hair-relaxer ever made. Nothing works... Huey: Have you tried emphasizing the natural beauty of her African features? Tom: ... Or how about Lye? You know, burn her hair straight, like the old days. That might work...

All Huey is trying to do is convince Jasmine to embrace the beauty of her African heritage.

Does Jasmine’s father have self-esteem problems? Why would he think his daughter’s hair needs straightening?

Tell Jazmine she has leukemia. Shave her head & give her sugar pills. She’ll soon realize what she no longer has & will yearn for it to grow out again. The sugar pills will cure her leukemia and she’ll be at one with “the natural beauty of her African features.”

I finally get why this comic strip calls him “Tom”.

Several commenters have made this comparison, which I feel is not justified.
“Harriet Beecher Stowe intended Tom to be a “noble hero” and a praiseworthy person. Throughout the book, far from allowing himself to be exploited, Tom stands up for his beliefs and is grudgingly admired even by his enemies."

Have they ever said whether Tom has any female relatives who can teach Jazmine how to take care of her hair?

I’m glad so many women took Huey’s advice and learned to love their natural hair.
