Yes, I get questions like that all the time, and I always answer: “I’m American.”
No come back after that from anyone.
A quick change of subject follows, or continuation of a previous conversation, but they watch their language, that’s for sure, just in case they might “offend” me with their stereotypical observations, because I always ask them to give me examples from their own life, not something the “heard on the news”, or “read on the internet”, or “my neighbor told me”…, etc.
