It saddens me to say that that is what I have thought about their relationship and about the Verne-abuse in this strip for a long time. Don’t get me wrong, I like the strip very much. But I felt that Verne was put in a position where he would be mocked and abused continuously due to his fear of being alone.

It wasn’t always like this. In the first couple years at least, while Verne did get mocked, he had no more trouble in life than R.J., and they had plenty in common in terms of intellect and taste.
