I admit I’m confused, but that doesn’t bother me at all. Being in the dark is half the fun! I’m sure it will all make sense in the end. But right now I’m just enjoying the ride.
Has anyone else noticed that the calendar in today’s strip is historically inaccurate? The real June 1944 began on Thursday, June 1. D-Day occurred on Tuesday June 6th, 1944. Easy mistake for a prop man to make if this hospital room is a phony designed to trick our hero into thinking that that bump on the noggin took him back in time 70 years.
Let us assume that Dick Tracy has travelled back in time (as implausible as that may be). Assuming that Annie and the nurse are telling the truth, he was at some time the village police force in Simmons Corners before enlisting on December 8, 1941 (the day after the Pearl Harbor attack). He eventually ended up fighting in Anzio, Italy, and was injured. That battle ended in June of 1944, which is the date on the calendar. That would require him to be in the past from before December 1941 to June 1944.
cheapskate0 was saying, 18 hours ago, that he should be missing from the present for however long he was in the past. I don’t know if that’s true but if it is, he’s not going to show up in the present again for a long time.
If he’s not in the past, then he’s in a very elaborate set, staffed with lots of actors that reminds me of Jim Carrey’s 1998 movie, The Truman Show. I would have to wonder how the kidnapper could have built such a set and hired actors for it.
Meanwhile, Tess hasn’t been reading her email yet. I hope she does that soon! (If she’s not going to have a Wrist Wizard, like he granddaughter had, she should at least get herself a smartphone.)
It may be getting weird, true. Still, I think this mesh up of these two comic worlds is terrific. And if anyone could pull this off successfully, I’d put my money on Team Tracy. They’ve earned my trust.
Sigh, the truth is there was zero movement in the story today. Nothing new was learned. All we got was repackaged old news. Try not to look at the messenger but the message today. LOL!
I seriously expected the “informant” to be the Pouch, because Punjab did interview him earlier. Now we find out that the informant is one of the characters involved in Annie’s kidnapping. So how does Pouch figure into this?
And be sure to check out Neil Wick’s links. They explain who this character is and show his involvement in Annie’s abduction. Thank you, Neil Wick. I was going to post those links myself, but there’s no need for both of us to do it.
Also, there apparently have been at least five real life people known as “the Butcher of the Balkans”. As the Comics Curmudgeon said, it says something about your region when you need a disambiguation page like that.
The key thing to me is that Willemse (for want of his real name) had gotten hooked up with an organization that moved war criminals to a safe haven.Could Axel be the guy behind the operation? And could Simmons Corners – 1944 – be that safe haven?
What a kick to have Sam and Warbucks working together. This is an intriguing new informant. He was the Captain of the ship that spirited Annie away. He had a gun to his head and is here to help, if he can. This complex case has seen information provided by Mr. Am, Pouch (off panel, yet clearly motivated to tell Punjab all), Warbucks (today citing Intropol Agent Shuter), and now the Captain. Axel and “The Butcher of the Balkins” seem to be two separate threads of the tale, as “BoB” is apparently not on Thunder Island. Tracy/Annie, Sam/Warbucks & the MCU, and Punjab/Asp constitute three threads of what I find a very rich realization of the crossover. These groupings promise arcs that I’m anxious to see unfold. Tracy took a boat ride in the dead of night, certain that the coordinates in Annie’s letter were a clue. He was right, but somehow injured in his attempt to investigate. How was he injured? By whom? What might Annie have said had the nurse left her alone with Tracy?.It is a wise move by Team Tracy to weave in important information from the close of the Annie strip four years ago. I’ve dropped in a couple of panels from the closing Annie story over the past few weeks (Sandy sniffing out trouble under Warbucks’ watchful eye, and Warbucks at the window, trying to come to grips with what he believes is the death of Annie, in the final day of the strip). Today we have more helpful links from Neil and Tarry. Thanks! .Punjab and Asp’s investigative methods are bound to prove unorthodox. I’m glad they are not under the wing of the MCU, as this will allow them to take certain…liberties. Sam is in charge of the team and has a helping hand from Warbucks. The MCU has a full plate with Tracy missing and new information on “BoB.” There is a lot going on and I am hooked. As we saw with the excellent “Mysta Reborn” story, Team Tracy does especially fine work with the freedom to weave many threads into the tale. .Lizz could likely lend a helping hand in interrogations. She knows there’s just one language “they” understand.
Thanks to Willy007, MoParMitch, cpalmeresq, 60sFan, Neil Wick, fhofmann, Starman1948, Morrow, JPuzzleWhiz and mzkdad for the kind words. Much appreciated.
If the policy in the Tracy household is to use e-mail to let family members know about plan changes, etc., why doesn’t Tess check e-mail, now that Tracy seems to be missing? If, on the other hand, they usually just write each other notes, why did Tracy use e-mail in this case?
Now comes the Natl Inquirer asking where Tess & Adonis spent the last several days! They will want to know did Tess/Adonis play it safe? And who paid? Coming to a grocery store near you this week.
I’m really glad to see the dangling threads from the last “Annie” story being picked up, and not simply forgotten. But then the idea was that “Willemse” was going to get help to hide from authorities. Who knows? Tracy and Annie may bump into other bad guys, long gone.I’m sure that Annie was trying to coach Tracy on a cover story – that he was the local cop – so that Axel won’t be suspicious.(By The Way: I don’t think we were ever given “Willemse’s” real name, just what was on his Dutch passport.)

Sloppy “Balkins” instead of “Balkans,” surprising given the high level of DT otherwise.
