Well, they come from places that are not all that healthy…some just might be carrying diseases that are not usually found in the US. It will not be easy to quarantine those children, so I am guessing this is where Paul Rodriguez is coming from…

Immediate deportation is illegal under a law signed by George W. Bush, at least for children coming from countries that do not share a border with the US.

Hey, to everyone who yesterday acknowledged that they had been to Olongapo PI, how did you like it? Wonderful place and I am sure you all realize there are people in the PI waiting for their Visas. Do you really feel it is fair to deny them access due to floods of illegals that just walk over the border and then put a drag on the flow of Legal immigrants?

Much like John McCain and his work wife, Lindsay Graham, are the only foreign policy / war “experts” in the US.

Uh, why is everyone ignoring Lalo’s falsehood? This goes beyond artistic license.

If you would watch the National news ie CBS, NBC, or ABC you would see a large amount of them never show up for their day in court. Instead they disappear into the illegal underground.

Yup, haven’t been able to find anywhere that Paul Rodriguez talked about diseases regarding the refugee children. That’s sloppy editorializing, and gives an in to would-be pedants like indie to object to the whole argument. Like others here have said, the “diseased immigrant” trope is at best overblown, and follows a long history of racist anti-immigrant sentiment from the descendants of immigrants. Ironically enough, it gets picked up and used by direct descendants of those it was used against before (Irish, Italians, Jews, etc., etc.)..As far as “only Latino in the US,” indie, it’s a comic strip. It’s hyperbole. And it’s making the point that there is a distinct lack of Latino faces and voices on US non-Spanish-language news channels. To be fair, another panelist (out of 4) was Alberto Cutié, a Puerto Rican priest. But even considering that, why have a panel on refugees on a news show made up of a comedian, a priest most famous for leaving the Catholic Church and becoming Episcopalian, a Minuteman extremist, and a Republican strategist? There are tons of folks who work on border issues and this is the best they could come up with? It’s just one more piece of evidence that CNN needs to take one of those N’s out of its name.

Actually, the idea of “infected Immigrants” wasn’t just conjecture… Case in point: Ellis Island in NY. Most, if not all, immigrants Had to pass health exams in Ellis Island Before being let into the country. Many had, for example, eye diseases and were not permitted entrance. Others that were found to have some form of disease were also not permitted entrance. Of course, there was always the semi-stance that All of those “dirty” immigrants Had to have some kind of disease. However, despite fine-tooth combing for diseases, none were found in many people. Many Were let into this country LEGALLY. There are many books that have been written re: the immigrants of Ellis Island. My mother’s relatives all came from Poland; they were all let in (a healthy bunch they were). My father’s relatives were here before the French and Indian War (and a healthy bunch they also were). Unfortunately, the Native Americans didn’t realize what was going on: that eventually “white” men coming to this country would also include the French along with the English and others (e.g. Germans, etc.) with the French eventually claiming land in Quebec (as it is now known), and southern Louisiana (including the areas purchased from the French in our Louisiana Purchase). Of course, we know what lands the English, German, etc. “claimed.” Since this is forum is for a “comic” not a “political cartoon,” I am Not providing links like I would do if I was commenting on an Editorial Cartoon (which I very rarely do because of the very real necessity to cite sources). I do have any number of books pertaining to these areas; have fun looking them up! I did when I took a Master’s course about early American history. This post is very loosely based on my readings. I am here for fun, not to prove a political rant.

Dude, you oughta get a job at the local multiplex, you project so much. #1, I agreed with you that Paul Rodriguez said nothing about diseases on that CNN panel, but you seem to have completely ignored that. And what’s with your own vehemence? And my lengthy post (ever checked your own verbiage, M. Pot? Are you jealous?) was actually about adding substantive info. Something that cannot, I’m afraid, be said of you. You peddle in innuendo, inane and leading questions (Yes, Dorothy, there sometimes are dumb questions!), and general cussedness. .Now, let me ask you: Has anyone on this board posted their personal biography? You haven’t even answered my very innocuous question from a couple days ago: what other comics do you like? I’ll let you in on a secret, if you promise to give us the names of a few gems that bring you daily pleasure. Here’s my secret: I’ve never met Lalo, never met (that I know of) anyone that even knows him. Not related either. No filthy lucre is involved here: this is purely for my own entertainment. So, indie, there’s some disclosure for ya. How about you cough some up yourself? But I have no faith you will, because you strike me as someone who does not do things in good faith. And since you’ve started the prediction game, I predict that you will not prove me wrong..By the way, you have a right to disagree, and I have a right to call your posts out as generally unenlightening and destructive to any sort of intelligent discourse. (I’ll pause to let you look a few of those words up.) To be honest, if I caught you posting the same blather on another forum, I’d call you out for it there, too.

Aw, indie, it’s so sweet how much you like to talk about me. Though you seem incapable of saying anything truthful. Does disagreeing with someone now constitute “telling people what they should do”? Really, indie, how imprecise of you. And then you continue with your general nastiness and paintings with a brush so broad you could do the side of a barn in one swipe. Are you saying that since you never have anything positive to say you’re negating your side? Your posts are sounding more and more desperate. And since when have I told you not to post about Lalo? I’m just telling you what I think about those opinions, which is, as you know, not much. But it seems you’re too thin-skinned to take the same medicine you like to dish out. And by the way, indie, you’ve predictably not answered my question. Why are you so afraid to tell about some comic strips you actually like? Why not do some advertising of something positive? But heaven forbid you think I’m telling you to do that. Wouldn’t want you to get the vapors!

Not sure of what you are referring to when you write, “It (?) wasn’t conjecture it (?) was slander.” Yes, I agree, any and all reasons to keep out “undesirables” such as the Catholic Irish were used. But came they did…although, like the Irish, they were refused employment even before they walked in the door (e.g. “Irish Need Not Apply” signs were placed in the front windows of stores, etc.). And, of course, the horrors of the “Jim Crow” laws… I’d like to extrapolate what I am writing about, but it is late and I am tired of writing…
