Ah! Here we go! What do you mean? This is the perfect spot for our fort! The ground is flat, there's plenty of shade, and... and... On second thought, it might be a tad buggy. Thish ish why I never became a cub shcout.
I worked for the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests one summer way back when and we were about 40 miles north of Sudbury. Only humans in a bunch of miles and food for mossies, black flies, horseflies, etc. We wore nets over our hard hats to keep the little scurves (blackflies) out as they were as prolific as depicted in the cartoon.
“Are those sand flies? Blasted sand flies…”-Sand files? Try sand gnats! They’re a menace in my old home of Savannah, Georgia. Worse yet, there’s a minor league team named after those insects!
Shoulda put on the OFF before they trekked into the woods…..I read a book about John Adams (“founding father”, Nate!! 500 word essay, yes??) once…..when he was in the fledgling Army (French & Indian War-era) He remarked that the native Americans living near the fort “smelled like rotten eggs”……one tough summer, & the men found out what THAT was all about: there was a certain flower that the natives would mix with some water and mash into a liquid form. Then they’d slather the exposed areas of their bodies with this stuff. Voila!! Early American insect repellent! The soldiers learned how to make this, and used it themselves to ward off mosquitoes, biting flies & similar pests.

Why don’t they do anything? Even if those are only gnats then they should be swatting at them. Maybe they found true love. <3 LOL

I’m thinking Peter never became a cub scout for the same reason he never goes outside to play.
