Yep, it seemed miraculous in 1980 to have your own personal copy of a movie or TV program to watch whenever you wanted and well worth the $500 for the VCR.
There are VCR’s long before 1980’s. I am unsure when made but they did exist back then. With technology changes keep moving to improve recording programs.

But what IS VCR? I really don’t know, even though I’m almost 60. (But I am not American.) Is it a video-player?

VCR? A little out of date – it should br DVD which is almost out-of-date too.
