Last actual penny candy I saw was 1982–3 at a convenience store in Georgia whose owner must have looked pretty hard to find individual wrapped candies he could sell for a penny each. Squirrel Nut Zippers, Jungle Jollies, and Stix were the main content, and he had to put the same thing in multiple slots to fill it out.
I admired his resolve. We moved away, so I couldn’t keep track of how long he was able to do it.
There’s still a penny candy store in Live Oak, Ca. called, unsurprisingly, The Penny Candy Store. When I’d take the family to Sacramento, this was a must-stop. They even currently have a video on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCo6QvTF2xEHaven’t been that way in years, but they’re still there, says the internet.10221 Live Oak Blvd, Live Oak, CA 95953

When I was a kid, for a quarter you could get enough candy to get sick on.
