Or they panic because they don’t know how to do math if change is required…

And they have to figure out how to make change (even if the register tells them the amount).

Even if the POS terminal tells them what the change is, they have trouble counting it out; especially fast food places!

fortunately last night when I went to the grocery store, I had a competent cashier who knew how to give me the proper change back…

I hate the new chip readers! Used to be I could have swiped, entered my pin and be done before the cashier was done. Now I have to wait till they are done, wait for the reader, then enter my pin.

I was never taught right as a kid on counting money, yes addition and subtraction, not how to break cash down. Son works at times as cashier has no problem, as most customer’s pay by credit/debit card.

Mom taught me to total a charge, count cash, break a bill, make change and say ‘Thank You’. Before I was in kindergarten.

Cash & carry… if you don’t have the cash, you can’t carry.

I get as cranky as the next person about folks who can’t do math and fumble incompetently with bills or coins. To be fair, however, paying with debit does not depend at all on your credit score.
