You think there aren’t skating rinks there? I grew up in the desert (Phoenix AZ), and it was always funny to me that people there still loved their winter sports: Roadrunner hockey and the Metro Center ice skating rink… someone in Hawaii can chime in on whether skating rinks exist there though… ;-)
Mom’s right Ruthie takes a lot of practice. My mom who could drive, yet would not let us kids do different, only time for ice skating was watching on TV. Not even allowed to roller skate.
We just went over to the lake, laced them up, and kept at it until we stopped falling down.
Of course, in those days, the lake was solid enough to hold us all (and our minibikes, go-carts, etc.) from mid-November to early March every year; now it doesn’t freeze enough for safe skating ever………
To master even the rudiments of ice skating takes concentration and awareness. I did it in one go, but I think that isn’t common. The same with roller skates. One time. No falls. Though ice skating is less forgiving if you fall.

Then you would have to take surfing lessons (or hula dancing)…

No one has to learn to skate, Ruthie. It’s optional. :D

I wanted to learn to ice skate, weak ankles and all. Of course it was too expensive and Mom didn’t drive, so nope. Same on ballet lessons.
