When i was in grade school in the 70’s and 80’s we had a total of 5 kids fail out of our class. One was held back in kindergarten. We also had one girl who skipped a grade out of our class. I don’t remember anyone failing into or skipping into our class. I suspect it was the kids who were easily distracted as we were always in split clases. The grade ahead of us had about 35 students and the grade behind us had about 35 students, and even before anyone failed our class had around 18 students each year. So we always had 6 or so students from the class on either side of us and we would be given work to do while the other class was given their lesson and vice versa.
Reminds me of the news article about the senior in Baltimore public schools that was put back to the tenth grade because he had been pushed along for year and then couldn’t pass the required tests for graduation. What is really idiotic is that he was in the TOP 20% of his class. And people wonder why parents in inner-city schools what vouchers. Here is Forbes take on the matter: https://www.forbes.com/sites/adamandrzejewski/2021/03/30/baltimore-city-public-schools-promoted-student-with-013-gpa-while-spending-a-14-billion-budget/?sh=753ee54063dc
growing up in RI, had friend who was held back so often, he was driving to school in the 7th grade…you can’t make this stuff up…he was constantly in trouble for taking the principal’s spot

Dad: “Good. Visualize yourself as the only 45-year-old in the First Grade.”

If school doesn’t let out until 2:45, why is Joe not in school?

And they just announced that grades don’t matter this year, everybody moves up, and schools, teachers ratings will not matter.

Even when our girls were in school (graduated in 80 and 84) you got held back if you goofed off.

I love Grandpa and the way he plays with and interacts with the kids. Lots of humor there.

Are you sure it wasn’t rerun from what’s happening. Every summer he would have to go back to school and rerun the stuff he did all winter
