Actually, he does have a point. One does usually use the word “guide” to refer to someone or something that gives directions for how to find what you’re looking for.

In San Rafael, where one frequently sees guide-dogs-for-the-blind in training, I noticed a mockingbird which could imitate the “safe to cross” sound at the stoplight intersection. Yikes!
