Volunteer at your local shelter. If you have space and time, become a foster home for animals that need help on the way to becoming adoptable.Make a donation to an animal refuge or rescue service. Not just money, but food, blankets, cat litter or other useful items.Keep your eyes open, and if you see a case of verifiable animal neglect, contact the RSPCA.And yes, adopt a pet if you are ready for a longterm commitment.
We adopted 2 Katrina dogs, and we loved them like theynever had been loved before. We never knew exactly howold they were because we could not afford the tests, andnow they have both gone to doggie heaven. We will begoing to the humane society real soon to pick out anotherhomeless puppy!
Everyone just can’t go out and adopt, you know. For lots of reasons! Make a donation to a shelter. If you don’t have the ready cash, donate an old blanket. They take those and other cast offs.
For heaven’s sake, if you adopt a dog, keep it. I live in the country in the rural south and the city dwellers like to buy dogs for their kids and when their kids get tired of them, the dump them off near my house. I have enough pets, thank you. They are usually half-starved or tore up before they realize they don’t have the wherewithal to survive on their own against the foxes and coyotes in my neighborhood and come snooping around looking for help.
I met a woman last week who was trying to sell a litter of pit bull puppies. At first, I just felt sorry for her because I know how misunderstood the breed is. Then, she started complaining about how many pit bulls are in shelters and euthanized and that people should stop breeding them. She seemed completely unaware that she personified the problem.
