The world of entertainment is filled with wrong lessons. Just look at how many stars and athletes get caught doing drugs, commiting crimes, and are still idolized.
No, no. The fourth Star Wars movie was made fourth. “Star Wars”, “The Empire Strikes Back”, “Return of the Jedi”, and “Star Wars VII”. See. Four films.
Personally, I thought it was a mistake, story-telling wise, for Lucas to tell them all out of order like that…proof that the whole saga still needed more work when he got started…but hey, as Maria notes, it worked out well enough for him anyway.
There was a clause for a sequel in his contract, but the idea at the time was that the first would probably only do moderately well, as a kind of midnight movie, and the sequel would have to be done on a much lower budget. Alan Dean Foster’s SPLINTER OF THE MIND’S EYE was originally commissioned as the possible story for the sequel, under Lucas’ instruction that it have fewer setpieces and could filmed cheaply. Han Solo doesn’t appear in the book because Harrison Ford was not at the time signed for the sequel, while Mark Hammill an Carrie Fisher were. Then the first movie blew away all expectations, and Splinter was dropped. There would be plenty of dough to spend on the sequel, so Lucas might as well shoot for the story he really wanted to tell.
Hardly! Word on the street was that he was still writing out the details of “A New Hope” WHILE THEY WERE FILMING IT.
Don’t get me wrong, I respect Star Wars for its success, and I don’t think it’s not unjustified, but looking back, I think there were a lot of things Lucas could’ve done better still since the beginning of it all.
