Tadpole shrimp, are thought to be the oldest creatures on earth- they have barely changed since the Triassic period, over 200 million years ago. The Marine iguana of the Galapagos Islands can shrink its body length by up to 20% when food is scarce. The lion costume used in the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie was made from real lion pelts and weighed 50 pounds!

Also in 1939 Oz, Buddy Epsen (later to be known as 1960s Jed Clampett and 1970s Barnaby Jones) was going to be the Tin Man, but had an allergic reaction to the metallic make-up.

Never knew that about the lion costume! Now I’m in the mood to watch Wiz. of Oz today.

I always knew the tadpole shrimp by the name “tryclops” which are often sold as a sea monkey alternative

I wonder if the costume survived the pass of time.

The Cowardly Lion costume was actually 60 lbs. Bert Lahr couldn’t eat while in costume because of the way the mask was attached. He had to have his lunch through a straw. “Liquid lunch?”

Wish I, like the iguana, could shrink my body (not just the length) 20% before social events!
