Y’know, when Gertie started, she seemed warm, giving, intelligent. She seems to have degenerated into comic relief. She cannot possibly be that stupid. Wasn’t Rufus available for this scene?
the hospital here is named “Hancock MEMORIAL hospital”
and with that ironic name,
the local joke is ” you may walk in, but you get carried out”
do not do not do not trust one doctor with the only life you have for convenience’s sake
People. People. This IS a comic. As such, there are going to be jokes and plays on words. Gertie’s misunderstanding of what the doctor said is just that. However, having said that, having Walt in the hospital could also be an opportunity to parade characters through Walt’s room that we haven’t seen in a while.
Isn’t this why people read this strip for the humor?
I want included in the comments.
Gertie is doing right by contacting the son. Skeexie also needs to be there with his dad talking to the Dr.’s himself instead of relying on a caregiver. With Gertie having a play/misunderstand/and turning of words at least this gets the son’s attention and maybe the GA family too. So commenters this might prove interesting a lot of you wanted to see others from the GA family and this could happen.
Me I doubt if I live to be 110 years old, where as I have a mom and aunt especially the aunt is closing to the 90 mark and here mind is not altogether there. For here 3 more years. My own mom is healthier then me and my sister. :( and I do try hard for meals eaten the right way. But alas this isn’t about me.
I agree with Airboy, Gertie was introduced in GA as a registered nurse, and an intelligent woman. To reduce her to this level for the sake of a laugh is wrong. She would have known exactly what the doctor was saying. Rufus or Joel, on the other hand would have made a much better character to deliver this punchline.
I am hoping that Gertie’s message to Skeezix will send a panic through the entire family and they will all come streaming in to visit Walt. Hopefully, as they all turn up - it will ALSO be an opportunity for them to bring up some of the colorful past history of the Wallet family.
After the Rocky Mountain News breathed its last here in Denver, the Denver Post became concerned about the best way to save their own bacon. Consequently, I ended up on a panel which the Denver Post started to quiz readers about what is the best and what is the worst about the newspaper. Don’t know how many people have suggested that the Denver Post beef up their comics page instead of cutting it back the way the News did - but the Post has suddenly begun picking up odd little tid-bits - such as the SUNDAY Pluggers. In one of the questionnaires which I sent back, I mentioned that, while researching Gasoline Alley on the Internet, I came across an old-time newspaper which boasted of having 21pages of color comics on Sunday- and all for a nickle! I suggested that those old time newspaper editors KNEW that the comics sold their newspapers - and they ALSO knew how to stay in business. On the questionnaire I returned, I suggested that the Denver Post should pick up a LOT of classic comics - such as the Classic Comics which are available through the Comics Kingdom on the Denver Post’s Internet comic pages. Hopefully - the Denver Post will give that some serious consideration.
Besides - if Skeezix gets all bent out of shape by Gertie’s report - Skeezix should realize that it would only take a moment for Skeezix to ask to speak personally to the doctor himself!
