Ethylene is a gas and it does cause flowers to wilt in addition to causing fruit to ripen, so she’s not entirely wrong. She just used “kill” in place of “wilt”.

But Gramma, those are plastic flowers!

Day of the Triffids is one of my all-time favorite hokey SF movies. I will absolutely seek out the book, didn’t know it existed.

Hawks, The Triffs were actually not a bad movie with FX that wasn’t too bad for the day. More character study than the usual back then. Now let’s go for the obvious: Those must be EARL’S flowers.
