Earl puts out a noxious gas whenever he eats too many beans.

An interesting question: is a cut flower dead?

I’d say not, on a cellular level, since it continues to bloom (for a while) if put in water. Gradually, the individual cells die, the flower’s internal structures fail, and it wilts. Or think of a chicken with its head cut off: it actually can run around (for a while) before it quits.

Live/dead is not a neat binary condition, which makes some situations a lot more difficult.

Tulips continue to grow when cut, but to no good end result. LOL Would Earl or a wilted flower have the most dire effect on the other flowers. I do not care to be around to see which one wins.

Most of the time Opal is talking about Earl, so it would be a natural conclusion on Earl’s part.

Cut flowers are “only MOSTLY dead. There’s a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. ” (to quote The Princess Bride)

Just because something or someone is dying doesn’t mean they can’t be killed.

Just look at zombies and vampires - the undead. Even they can still be killed.
