Part of the problem, Dr. T, is that many anorexics and/or bulemics literally don’t see themselves accurately when they look in the mirror. If, to others, they look “healthy”, they see themselves looking like much heavier people. If their bones are protruding, they see themselves as looking like “healthy” people. And if they are carrying a few extra pounds, they see themselves as morbidly obese.
(In a couple of places above, I had to remove gender-specific language. In High School, I knew a guy who required treatment for anorexia.)
I’ve heard that the test for accurate body self-image is to wear a paper bag with eyeholes while standing nude before a full-length mirror. The idea is that the person will see his/her body, not his-/herself. Never tried it myself because I already know I need to lose 40 lbs.
