Transcript:
Calvin: "Wow, this is fun! All the tv shows we're not allowed to watch, and a bag of cookies each!"
Calvin: "Hey, what was that?"
Calvin: "AAUGH!! ROSALYN! H-HOW DID YOU G-GET IN??"
Calvin: "*gulp* Whoops, I think it's past my bedtime"
You need to think ahead, Calvin. Let her back in and go to bed so her story looks like nothing more than a tall tale. Make her the bad guy, not you. Now you’ll be grounded until you move out… even if Rosalyn asked for it in advance.
Another person who doesn’t know there was actually once a time when people did not have cell phones! There were such things as babysitters even way back in the 20th century, ya know. And they did not have cell phones.
I often wish cell phones had never been invented. People get very rude when it comes to using cell phones: screaming and yelling into their phones, ring tones going off in inappropriate places, ignoring the people around them,…
Bare in mind Calvin’s developed quite the reputation as a hellraiser. Mom has stated on quite a few occasions that she’s been on the phone with babysitters for hours, and Rosalyn is the only one who will agree to do it.
But yes, Roz probably should have called the cops… or maybe one of the neighbors let her use the phone and she called the restaurant where Mom and Dad were dining.
Today’s strip alone shows just how brilliant Watterson (and Calvin and Hobbes strip) was (is). The story, the artwork, the imagination. All brilliant. Look at Mom and Rosalyn. Perfect drawing of exactly what they both would be expressing at that moment.
Her attitude is the result of being the brunt of Calvin’s behavior over the years. The reason she still sits for them is that she’s the only one who (generally) can deal with him. As far as formal Child-Minding Qualifications are concerned – there are no nannies in the U.S.; therefore, no incentive for a young woman to take up this trade. I imagine these girls who take these classes in the U.K. have a career in mind, not just sitting with young children. U.S. parents rely on well-recommended (accent) teenagers for this service and 99% of them are conscientious and prepared for whatever comes along. Please don’t compare the two countries by this strip.
Best strip featuring Rosalyn and Calvin was one where she kept him in line by turning the tables on him in a game of Calvinball. I think it was a Sunday strip.
And a “like” or a “thumbs up” or whatever people are using to indicate agreement these days to all those who have pointed out that this is a comic strip and not to be compared to real life.
I don’t have any trouble believing Number Six’s story. I had one that beat me with a belt. To this day I have no recollection of why. I was too terrified of her to tell my parents, so it happened more than once. In time my parents found out about it, and she never returned. If it happened today, she’d probably go to jail for child abuse, but back then all that happened is that she was out of a job.
I would add that I tend to side with Calvin on this go-round. She sent him to bed for no reason the minute mom and dad were out the door, before he had done anything wrong, and then was planning to talk to her boyfriend on the phone all night. That’s a pretty horrible sitter.
Part of being a babysitter is ensuring the safety of the child, and she was trying to be nice and make him feel better, while also making sure that there is nothing out there. That’s why she was tricked, because she was doing her job.
“In the UK girls go to special colleges for three years to learn all aspects of child-minding before they qualify”*RV – congratulations on your superior college-educated babysitters. But here, most parents just want an amateur who does it for a little cash.*And I don’t think Calvin hates Roslyn at all. They have similar personalities (“get by with it if you can”), and she understands him pretty well. But agreed, letting herself get locked out was stupid on her part.
Like the MAD feature years ago of if comics were like real life and it showed Henry Mitchell giving Dennis the Menace a good paddling with the caption “Enough is enough!”

and this is what we call consequences, it’s not like he shouldn’t have seen this coming a mile away…
Thomas Scott Roberts creator about 10 years ago
Yep- Calvin operated on zero sense of consequences. Totally in the moment, he couldn’t imagine a single thing going wrong…

Sorry, captain, but your argument simply does not hold water.
Calvin IS toast, and deserves to be since he so much asked for it.
