This was part of an extended sequence. I told Schulz that it was one to which I always related. I was part of a crossing guard squad formed for a specific intersection a block from the school. We were all given banners and badges and were so proud.
After one week of service, we were disbanded and told the squad was no longer needed. No matter what the sensible adult reasons for the decision, we all felt as though we had somehow failed. Kids aren’t as worldly and all-knowing as TV and movies want us to believe.
