I worked at a small, isolated research lab. There was no place to eat lunch so we either brown bagged or used the microwave. Finally, we put together a “coffee mess” on the honor system. We bought snacks, Hot pockets, mini frozen packs of goodies, plus sodas, V-8 juice a good variety. We charged just enough to cover the retail price of the goodies. Before I retired, we were going through ≈ $400 + a month, had two refrigerators and microwave ovens. It was nice. The late night security guards loved the it.
We have water clubs. The company where we buy the bottled water also supplies the cooler. There is no standing around the cooler. You pays your monthly fee and then you can fill your cup or bottle and go back to your desk. not everyone belongs to the water clubs. But when a mudslide took out the City’s water supply for about 6 weeks, the bosses asked the water clubs to order in extra water, share and send the bill to the boss.
I still don’t understand why many folks will walk right by a drinking fountain, where the water is cold, free, & plentiful, and purchase a small bottle of water for $2.00 or more!

I know some people who are like that and they keep their complaints in two areas of the job site…at the cooler and everywhere else.

We could get bottled water and a water cooler — as long as we paid for it!
