Paper back then was made of a lot of things but it wasn’t wood pulp. Mostly plant fiber like linen and cotton.
Wood pulp for paper is a mostly late 19th century development.
That’s why 500 year old books are usually in better condition than 50 year old books these days. Google “slow fire library”
