Gene: Open a bistro? I thought you wanted to farm! Mary Lou: That'll be where we get fresh produce! Gene: Do you know how much work you're talking about here? Mary Lou: Neither of us is afraid to work! Mary Lou: But we'll start small, take little, little steps, keep things manageable! Gene: Pop sold 'The Dock' because you were working so hard! Mary Lou: Pop sold 'The Dock' to make a real-estate killing!

Bad Gus! He took ML’s toy away from her.
Letting a job define who you are can be a big problem for some people when the job goes away.

It seems Pop has told a few lies about why he was selling the restaurant.

Pop may have made a “killing” selling The Dock, but she owned half of it. She probably got half of the money from the sale, which could go toward opening her own restaurant. He was able to retire from the business while getting her the seed money to start her own place. Sounds pretty shrewd to me.

She runs the restaurant while he runs the farm. Partners in business and in life.

Does anyone know what the shapes are in panel 3?

I like ML’s character less and less with each story arc. She is a selfish and childish individual who 99% of the time is the cause of everyone’s grief and misery.
GR6 over 10 years ago
Perhaps, having made some bad decisions earlier in her life, ML is now trying too hard to make good ones.

I hope the driftwood isn’t supposed to be foreshadowing them drifting apart. (But it is before them, and they are shadowy. Nah… Jimmy’s just messing with us.)

Running a farm and a restaurant, two people. What planet is she from?

Mary Lou can work all the hours she wants to, but she can’t force anyone else to adhere to her workaholic lifestyle. Gene needs to speak up and tell her what HE wants, not let her make all the decisions.
