Use it. Someone with the right equipment will steal your PIN and drain your accounts and then you won’t have to worry about getting back to civilization.
Break the protective glass. Use the shards to focus sunlight for a signal fire made of the money when you see a ship or plane passing. Use to shred and strip kelp and other edible seaweeds. Fashion spears from the metal of the machine by rubbing metal against metal. Use to chop down coconuts if in those trees or to spear fish or make poles to fish with threads from your clothes. Use to dig for clams or other hidden mollusks. Using machinery inside, pound metal into bowl shape to capture rain water. Could be pounded into a boat shape, easily, but likely would not survive a sea journey. Good for local fishing. See, LOTS of good in that machine.
I’d say it has to do with a change in perspective worrying about money, namely striving to keep acquiring more. You find yourself trapped on an island with an ATM and think: why did you care so much about that green stuff again?
I’ll try again: After hunting all over creation to find an ATM, this TIME he finally found one, but it is of no use to him. Mr Wiley, am I making sense for HabaneroBuck?
Thank you, kpduty, but O. Henry’s stories don’t need illustration. in fact, it would be a detriment. His writing puts the pictures in your mind better than any illustrator.

IF he wants to get rescued, he could just pull the plug and they’d be there in two shakes. Assuming there’s a plug. Or a monitoring camera.

When I asked my bank why they didn’t have an ATM in our town, they told me to go pound sand. Who knew?

Go ahead, drain your account. Just try not spend it all in one place.

Wiley, you would be the perfect choice to illustrate O. Henry’s short stories…

Ironically, all the money in the world would be useless without anywhere to spend it.

I think the point is: All the money in the world can’t buy happiness. In this case it won’t even buy a cheap rowboat.

I don’t get it, what’s timing gotta do with this event? All reasonable answers will be considered.
If that is a real ATM, then that means he is able to communicate to someone at a bank, so he’s all set.
If it’s not a real ATM, then what does timing have to do with it?
If the answer is something like, “You’re supposed to look at it like this…..”, then the strip is a failure.
