This has nothing to do with today’s strip in particular, and I hope the cartoonist reads the comments. I really enjoy this strip! I like the art and the gentle humor.
Over the years, I have been taught by religious. I also have worked as teacher in a school run by a religious order. Though most members of the various communities were competent and intelligent, some were untouched by the more secular and / or seamier side of life. The jargon of the corrupt was not a part of their vocabularies.
The Monk is a true man of God; Many of the Bishops corrupt. Pope Francis truely has his work cut out for him. He will need all the help he can get from man and God.
But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. (Luke 18:16).Brother Leo certainly has the innocence of a child…and thereby his charm. An excellent character of excellent character.
RogersGeorge, Marrin appreciates your comment and support for the approach and balance he is trying to preserve in the Francis strip. There was a actual Brother Leo in the life of St. Francis, and he, too, was a kind of foil for the saint in the many stories told about him.

I just realized Brother Leo reminds me of the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz. Maybe the Pope can get him a brain!

The Monk is a little clueless but harmless and helpful. Not coniving or self promoting.

In other words, give the press a few suggestions, but don’t tell everyone the whole truth? Sounds like a recipe for a coverup.
