The Viking settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland predates Columbus by several hundred years. Technically, Columbus never landed in either North or South America.

A day dedicated to the first Italian, sponsored by Spain and sailing from Portugal, to visit the Bahamas. Maybe he was the model for so many U.S. government processes.

I’d say it was lost when the then Pope has the hubris to divide the unknown parts of the world in half and give one half to Spain and one half to Portugal.

Treaty of Tordesillas and Treaty of Saragosa.

Takes a massive ego to decide you own the entire world and can hand it out like party favors.

Pope Alexander VI had the requisite amount.

Is that because we believe in anything and fight hard for it?

Yes. If you were going for irony, you failed. You repeated the point. America (society therein) is lost, but there are rebel places within that still hold to virtue and honor. Yay freedom – a blessing and a curse.
