I used to have a red sleeping bag at the cottage. When it was hung out to air all the (male) humming birds would come to do battle with it — all 36 square feet of it!
I’ve had the Hummingbirds hover around me while I’m putting up a full feeder or taking an empty one down to fill. Their message is clear, “Hurry up!” Fun critters to watch.
I too have had my hummers dive bomb me when I’m taking in and filling up their feeders, hovering right next to me while I hang It back up! Little boogers. They also have to store enough energy to keep them alive at night when they go into torpor, a kind of shutting down while they sleep.

At the family cabin, the only things that scare the hummingbirds are the wasps.
