My problem is that too much emphasis is placed on the heritage and not the present which would create the future. People label themselves with their heritage first and their nationality last. The past should be reflected and remembered as a guide for the future; preventing themselves from repeating mistakes or Oops moments in history. The United States was once a melting pot of cultures creating unity from the diversity of cultures; but it appears to me that people have been emphasizing the diversity more than the unity that our freedoms gives us as Americans.

@cdwardThe issue I have is that some believe the tragedy of the past gives those of the present special compensation capitalizing the pain suffered by others and not by themselves. It would be best to prevent the tragedy from repeating and use it to motivate the present populace to achieve better than demand more.

mugens: They haven’t achieved it yet, either, but I like the Canadian alternative to melting pot – cultural mosaic. Each piece is distinctive, but together they make a great picture.
