Dear Dana: My pre-junior high best friend and I were typical horse-crazy girls. We spent our allowances at local riding stables and even had imaginary stables of our own. It was during the dark time of my mother’s illness and eventual death, and those horses — real and imagined — were a life saver. Thank you for bringing that magical time to life for me in such a charming way.
