Panel three shows just how dated this comic is – a stereo? Biggest thing any kid has now is an iHome.

Remember when the receiver took up one dresser, the turntable another, and the speakers seconded as nightstands. You’d power that big boy up in about 5 seconds, ready to hear/feel that throbbing bass roll across the floor. You’d hit that button and hear, “TURN IT DOWN!”
Now that 200 watt memory of a low draft number sits in the basement and my wife says, “Don’t even think of it.”

i can remember coming back to the place i was living (1977) to find one of my roommates listening to the new stereo he’d put in his room… on the street.

@plus4 - hey now, some of us love the Stones. (Though if he really is listening to the whole “High Tide” album, I’ll be really impressed!)

I’ve still got a setup like that in my den, yet I’m sitting here listening to Shostakovich on iTunes through my computer speakers.

Judging from Jason’s question I imagine it was he who decided to play that particular album.

Aaaahhhh, the joys of listening to music that people today are missing out on. Like listening for hours to two different sets of interconnect cables to determine which sounded better. No one even takes the time anymore to get the speaker placement right for the best acoustic soundstage. And don’t get me started on the lost art of cartridge azmuth adjustment on a turntable for the lowest noise level versus soundstaging. People today don’t know what they are missing.

chromosome, i also have a rig in my den that includes two turntables, an outboard D/A converter for the CD player and tube amplification but I listen mainly to my computer, not because of the sound quality, which is poorer, but because of the conveniece. I’m getting lazy in my old(er) age. But I still take the time to get the computer speakers placed correctly for the best imaging because it really does make a difference.

musicnut1986: Yeah, I still have two turntables, boxes of 45s and 33s, and a bunch of 78s, but like you say “older” corresponds to “convenience”, unfortunately. I have a lot of it digitized now, so I can just throw another CD on…”Bo’s Guitar”, coming up next.

Almost reminds me of that Fresh Prince of Bel-Air episode where Will goes back to Philadelphia with his aunt, uncle and cousins. Will bumps the jukebox in order to skip the repeated “I know” lyric of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine.”
