Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for October 09, 2014
Transcript:
Mary Lou: We appreciate you paying us, Pop, but there's nothing to do as it is! Mary Lou: You haven't let us do anything since we cleaned out the coolers! Mary Lou: I don't understand why we don't get on with things. This isn't like you! Gus: Well, I'd look pretty sad moping around an empty building, wouldn't I?

In panel three, if you took away Gus’ glasses and add more pounds, he reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock’s opening to his old anthology series. Cue “Funeral March Of A Marionette.”

So when they open their little bistro, Gus can sit outside the front door with his little glass of Pernod, and maybe a beret!!

I’m starting to wonder if Gus closed the restaurant because he got bad news from the doctor. It would explain his odd behavior.

Johnson—-you are making me crazy.

This is strange, but also understandable. It seems that Gus is experiencing the transition blues…. that period in-between one lifestyle and another. You do not feel like you belong anywhere. I think he simply wants Gene and Marylou around for company during this transition.

Gus has something up his short sleeve….

Sounds like Empty Nest. MaryLu is gone, Gene is gone, the restaurant is gone. Everything that has given meaning and direction to Gus’ life is gone. He does not know what to do with himself.

Beginning to beg the question why he closed down the joint.
