Caufield is way beyond his class and Mrs. Olsen. We need more Caufields.

‘One size fits all’ squeezes. There are special ed classes for people on the lower end of the IQ spectrum, but very few AP programs for the high end, so these students are bored, and when you are bored, you will sometimes be disruptive, especially if you are as young as these kids are portrayed. He should probably be several grades farther along, but who would he talk to then? It’s a big problem…

That Prof should have been fired. He supposed to be teaching optics, not speed writing.

Caufield (well, the character personified as “Caufield” ;-) ) displays typical behaviors of a highly intelligent student. He’s not being challenged in his current class setting, despite Mrs. Olsen’s best efforts. He’s also learned exactly what buttons to push (and how hard to push them) in order to keep himself mentally occupied throughout the day.

Interesting that “nerd” can apply to jock activities.

When my children were in school years ago in Salem, Oregon, there was a TAG (talented and gifted) program for the children who needed additional challenges. One woman, whose daughter didn’t qualify for the program ran for the school board with the express purpose of dismantling what she called an “elitist” program. Mrs. Sour Grapes was elected to the board and fulfilled her goal. Who knows the harm she caused not only to those kids, but to future generations?
