I can’t speak for Seattle, but I know that in the DC area, I’m constantly having to tell employees of various establishments that I know how to read. They’re always telling me stuff like, “Click Next”, or “Move over to Line Number 4” as if I’m illiterate and/or too dumb to figure things out for myself. Maybe it’s because there’s so many people in the D.C. area for whom English is not there first language, that they don’t want to treat someone differently just because they look like they’re probably English-literate.
