I realize that in the USA, many think that ANY public education is an abomination and would like to do away with it altogether. I, however, feel it is essential to a healthy society, and that college is nowadays just as important to the well-being of said society. So yes, university should be tuition-free just as elementary, middle, and high school are. If others can do it, we certainly have the means and knowledge to do so, too.

I’m always amused when I hear anyone talk about “free” anything. NOTHING is ever free – someone always has to pay for it. Just because you don’t see money changing hands when you receive it doesn’t mean it’s free.

The problem with “free” education is that it’s difficult to get into those colleges. Do you think everyone in foreign countries gets to go to college free? Nope, they have to WORK for it. TEST for it. Things that are anathema in the U.S. Community College is free in my state and there are so many students who have absolutely no business being there, but it’s free, so hey, why not waste a few years doing nothing (and I teach there, I DO mean doing nothing).
