See, Tracy hasn’t forgotten about the long list of criminals that are still on the loose. He’ll get them eventually. Meanwhile, something new is developing at the Patterson Playhouse, and that will come first.
Aliens? Hey, does that mean…Relax, guys. I know how some of you have to grab your blood pressure meds at the mention of aliens.Sasquatch, though, is a Marvel Comics super-hero, so a cross-over…
MJ,.Re your comment from yesterday:.“[Red Tomahawk’s action] Kinda reminds one of Lt. Cally, doesn’t it? ‘Just following orders.’ Yeah . . . ".No, it doesn’t. And I think you’re quite aware that the comparison is not merely imflammatory (though it is certainly that), but invidious. Moreover, it’s not even an accurate description of what Calley did..Calley was charged with murdering over 100 unarmed civilians, mostly women, children, and the elderly. These were acts that flagrantly violated the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and was not in any way authorized by the orders he had been given..Red Tomahawk arrested a man who had been inciting violence, told him he would be shot first if any attempt was made to wrest him from their custody (a common, and, in the historical context, not unjustified ploy to blunt such attempts; deadly force was, and in some circumstances still is, legally justified to thwart escapes from custody), and, in tmidst of being attacked by a force that outnumbered the officers he commanded (because, with the deaths of Lt. Bullhead and 1st Sgt. Shave Head, he was left in command of the police detail), by a factor of more than five to one, kept his prisoner from escaping in the only way he could, then, for the next half-hour, led a defense against that superior force, managing to pull most of the men under his command out alive..To me, that sounds a little more like Lt. Murphy. (Audie Murphy, for those of you who don’t get the reference)..I understand that Sitting Bull is a sympathetic figure. Not altogether undeservedly. But, in this case, he was inciting violence, attempting escape when he knew the possible consequences, and urging his followers to attack the police officers who had him in custody..What Red Tomahawk did in those circumstances doesn’t match any of Calley’s actions in any respect.
One last point. For good or ill, the death of Sitting Bull marked the end of the Indian Wars. A more or less persistent state of warfare between the Plains Indians and non-Indian settlers, a state that endured from before the Civil War until 1890, really did neither side any good.
Actually, Sitting Bull was killed on Dec 15th, Wounded Knee took place on Dec 29th. That event marked the end of the Indian Wars.Oh, and Sitting Bulls son was found in the house hiding under a mattress. He was dragged out and shot to death by two of the police officers. He was unarmed.
The things I learn from this board! Thank you for the Sitting Bull discussion. As for the discussion between Tracy and Sam, it reminds me of several had between a certain Friday and Gannon. Love it.
Tarry Plaguer and Sgt,, Doherty gave to us readers awsome accounts of American history that was well worth reading.Great job. Now back to our story BB Eyes and Blaze Rize.
Missing Sam’s cigarette. Doesn’t look like Sam. Not sure about Tracyville, but there are parts of the country where you aren’t permitted to smoke inside ‘government’ buildings.
The cast of characters is lining up…interesting to see how this will all tie together..thanks to PQ77 for the fabulous poetry and the archives of Dick Tracy history you have in store..when us old guys see a hot young lady all we can do is stare and say…Egads..
“Sasquatch is an Amerindian word for the large hairy people of the forests who…”-—————Yeah, I know. I was making a joke (like the bit about aliens and blood pressure meds).
You can’t sum up 350 years of Native American history in one incident. The incident in which Sitting Bull was shot sounds a lot like a riot. That the police were themselves Lakota probably resulted in fewer casualties than if it were white vs. red.
*It is no less bad if your own people now enforce the same laws, *-———-The fact is that a cop – anywhere, any color – who can relate to the people he polices will give better service than an outsider.Red Tomahawk and his fellow officers weren’t the bad guys here.If anything, they were able to show more compassion and care than white military police who didn’t speak the language or understand the customs, and would be quicker to be afraid and overreact. (We’ve seen that, too.)Remember, the whole incident began because whites were frightened by the Ghost Dancers.
Wow, what a great story! You’ve got to write all that down. It’s the little things like the way your dad and uncle were taught lacrosse that shape history on a bigger scale.-—As far as what we’ve learned from it…Probably not much.People are the same now that they were a thousand years ago, and a thousand years before that.We can communicate better than ever, but people still don’t want to listen to things that challenge their ideas.
Sorry to interrupt the discussion, but I’d like to comment on a comic strip called “Dick Tracy”; some of you may already be familiar with it……anyways, I found it very interesting Sam only mentioned Rikki being alive; I mean, unless they recovered a body why wouldn’t they think Abner escaped again as well? There wasn’t THAT much cement that they wouldn’t comb through it to find him afterwards, so, when you add in the mask, there is a big possibility she is indeed going to try to pose as him, I’d say……

Morning, Tracyville! This is a very interesting discussion about Red Tomahawk and Sitting Bull. I read the entire discussion and enjoyed it very much.
Now, back to Dick Tracy. Today’s strip is very benign, probably for a good reason. I wonder where all this is going to go in the next few days.
