Like selenium, arsenic is an essential nutrient. That you only need a tiny amount of. Large amounts are toxic, leading to sickness and or death. However deficiency leads to:
The beneficial effects of substantially lower intakes of arsenic have been demonstrated in three independent studies involving four animal species where basic diets provided less than lug of arsenic/gm. Rats, chickens, minipigs and goats raised on low-arsenic diets (< 35 ng of arsenic/g) exhibited reduced growth rates during early life. In goats, the most closely investigated species, reproductive performance is also impaired, as a result of decreased conception rates, increased abortion frequency, greatly increased maternal mortality (especially during lactation) and reduced viability of newborn kids. Cardiomyopathy, associated with a derangement of cardiac mitochondrial structure, may be the cause.
I love the sign labeled “Sidewalk Closed” when, in fact, there is NO sidewalk anywhere you look!.In my logical mind, the sign should read “Sidewalk Missing”…
It is reported that through the north belt of the US, selenium is mostly absent from the soil. 5 years ago, at 78 years, I started to take selenium as a supplement. As a result the few white hairs I once had on my head dissapeared. Every summer the dark hairs on my forearms always turned white. This last summer none turned color. My once auborn beard is still white, however.
Iodine is also an essential trace element – with emphasis on trace. Back in the 1940s, goiters were common here in the midwest. Gone now that iodine is put in salt. (Wasn’t a problem on the coasts due to consumption of sea food)
