Mom: After preschool we're going to Grandma's to help her open some jars. Alice: I'll wait in the car. Mom: No you won't. Are you being scared of Big Shirley? Alice: Who? No! Big Squirrelly? I don't- is that a name? Mom: I'll protect you.

Alice fears nothing, except Big Squirrelly. Big Shirley loves everyone, except people who call her Big Squirrelly….

I used to have a neighbour with a dog like Big Shirley. Every time I had to pass their house, I would break into a run in case the dog happened to be lurking in the yard, or they chose that moment to take it out. I was terrified, I tell you.

Yay, Big Shirley! A mixture of a wild boar and a wump (from Bill Peet’s The Wump World).

My grandma and grandpa had cats when I was still just a baby. Whenever we would visit, when they walked by me in the kitchen they appeared to me to be the size of cows.

I always under the impression that Big Shirley is just a big black teddy bear who wouldn’t hurt a fly, and the only thing to be scared of about her was her large size to those easily intimidated by such things (aka petite little Alice). But Richard never really says one way or another on the matter. As far as he was concerned, Big Shirley is just big and Alice is afraid her.
