I remember being given a hamster as a pet. The cage was put near my bed and he kept me awake at night with the squeaking wheel, or trying to force his way between the waterbottle hanger and the side of the cage (night after night!). Why give a child a pet that’s awake all night and sleeps all day—and can be very agressive when wakened during the day?
We gave our oldest son a hamster when our second son was born. He loved it and improved his vocabulary. When my mom asked him how he liked his new brother, he said, “He’s ok, but he’s nocturnal”.

Protip: A drop of vegetable oil on the wheel bearings stops the squeaking.
