I had a “phonographic” memory, and recorded adult conversations and mulled over their possible meanings afterwards, often coming to strange and wrong interpretations.. I know that most adults don’t think children understand what they hear, but they do. Children at a young age are primed for learning, and they look to adults and older children for it. How many cruelties do I remember from childhood and curse the perpetrators!
