Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for December 17, 2014
Transcript:
Hobbes: Still making snow art? Calvin: Yep! Hobbes: Yesterday your sculpture melted. Calvin: This time I'm taking advantage of my medium's impermanence. Calvin: This sculpture is about transience. As this figure melts, it invites the viewer to contemplate the evanescence of life. This piece speaks to the horror of our own mortality! Passerby: Hey stupid! It's too warm to build a snowman! What a dope! Ha ha ha ha! Hobbes: A Philistine on the sidewalk. Calvin: Genius is never understood in its own time.

Evanescence is quite an esoteric word for a six year old.

It can be too cold to build a snowman (snow won’t pack when it gets too cold), but if there’s enough snow, it can’t be too warm. Down here in south Texas, the locals get so excited about even a very ligh snowfall that they will make a snowman with segments that seem to have been assembled usiing an ice cream scoop, and the news media often prints photos.

Not only is genius not understood, neither is species.

Interestingly, Bill Watterson’s genius was understood in its own time, and it continues to be appreciated. But Bill Watterson, the person, was never fully understood by the general public, and probably never will be.Genius often goes together with an unusual personality. What is amazing is how someone with such an unusual personality can create something that relates so well to millions of people who are less unusual.

Wow, my vocabulary has expanded exponentially today with new words and Calvinisms! Who says reading the comics isn’t educational?

If your going to build art out of snow, it’s important that you are appreciated in your own time.

“Evanescence” and “philistine” – pretty sophisticated vocabulary, especially for a 6 year old. Pelt that philistine with some impermanent snowballs!

A nice big snowball might help him appreciate your genius!
