History: The first clocks had one hand, for the hours, moving clockwise in imitation of the shadow on the sundials the clocks replaced. The next hand to be added showed minute (mi-NOOT) divisions of the hour and became the minute (MIN-et) hand. The second hand to be added became, well, the second hand.
(But I have often wondered about the Australian question. Does anyone here know?)
Has anyone noticed the massive “North- Up” chauvinism used on most maps? .If you get a map or chart for almost any place on Earth, North is consistently “up”. .There are exceptions, but it’s hard to find them.
