When high school classes were over for the day, sometimes I visited my father (who was principal) in his office just to say hello and see him later at home.
I could never “drop by” where my father worked, but sometimes, on Saturdays, he’d take me. He was a foreman at a wood shop (where they made brush handles, broom heads, etc.). As a little kid I could do things like sweep up, bring empty barrels up to be filled, etc. His boss would give me a few dollars (this was in the early ‘70s) and also buy me something from the snack machine. I learned how to drive a forklift at age 12. When I was 16 I got my first REAL job there, as did all of my older siblings at some point. I stayed for 2 years (until my dad laid me off). My dad’s now retired, the old boss has since died, and the company is gone…but I still have my memories.
Charlie Brown is not bald. The squiggle on his forehead is the edge of his bangs, not a single hair. It is clearer if you see the oldest strips in B&W. Unfortunately, colorists usually put a skin tone on his entire head, which gives the wrong impression.
My dad worked for Halliburton in the oilfields and sometimes he would let me go to work with him. Riding in that big truck was soooo cool. I would stay out of the way somewhere where I could watch dad on the back of the truck working the levers that controlled the pumps and all that. That’s where I learned to cuss. When the job was over and the men went to the cafe in town to eat, a lot of the grownups would joke around with me and I would feel so grown up. Now that I’m thinking back on it it was a really great time.
I couldn’t go to my father’s work, but my brother and I were always included in everything he did around the house. I was about 3 when he got me my first set of small tools and I still have the hammer and the saw and the pliers.
Charlie Brown has a crewcut, according to Schulz himself. His Dad just does a thorough job keeping it short. It looks like bald head because- and for some reason, few people take this into account- it’s a very simple drawing style.
Charlie Brown’s lack of hair emphasizes the shape of his head, which led to things like Lucy using him for a Jack-O-Lantern model, and that “fur-ridden animal” calling him that “roundheaded kid.”
I’m trying to picture CB in a crewcut. Weird…..in a good way. Changes his personality a bit, I think. Looking bald with a curl on top suits him better here, I think.
My own dad had a small business. He owned a shop where he sold and repaired boats, outboard motors and chainsaws.I remember one time, when I was about 9 or 10, he had me crawl into the tank where he did something with the outboard motors and gather up some blades that had come off the propeller part. (I have never had an interest in mechanics so I am not sure what he did with the motors in the tank.)These days, that kind of thing would probably result in a call from child protective services, even though the blades were dull and smooth and the tank was drained dry, so there was no danger.
I can’t imagine Charlie Brown getting a haircut. The only family I see is my cousin’s husband who owns the Butchers in our street.Me and my Mum sometimes stop and say Hi to him.xxx
My dad would take me to work with him at the fire station when he was working night shift. I’d share his cot (I was only 5-6 at the time). If he went on a run, it was my job to close the doors on the apparatus floor and watch the station until they got back.
My husband spent his summers with his grandfather who owned a machine shop. Hubby grew up with a great skill set and a lifetime appreciation for craftsmanship..My dad was a civil servant, and mom was a stay-at-home mom.But Mom was the one who taught my brother to fly fish, Dad passed on his love of gardening to me.
There’s a Sunday strip in which Charlie Brown totally owns Violet, who’s been bragging about her father, by taking her to the barbershop and telling her approximately what he says here. As always, he’s polite about it, which just makes it worse for her.
I have lunch with my dad every Saturday afternoon after I get off work, and my mom, brother, and I have breakfast with my grandpa every Saturday morning. They always appreciate the time I spend with them.
@Snoopy_FanI think the moderators actually read through the comment before they decide to remove it but I don’t know for sure. I know that a long time ago before I joined GoComics, A comment had to have at least 3 flags before the moderators looked at it and decided to delete it. Thanks for your kind words!-Well as Frank Sinatra says – Let it Snow!-Luckily, I don’t need to email you the photo as today I learned how to post images! I know I’ve posted images before but those have been from Bing Images. I had no idea how to post my own photos unless I had them on my avatar. So here is my badge:
It’s lovely isn’t it?-Today I’ve had a bit of sad news. My cousin announced that him and his partner are splitting up after 14 years. My cousin texted my Dad. They have 2 little boys called Aaron & Jamie. Aaron is 2 years old and Jamie is 7 months. I love them both so much although I haven’t met Jamie yet but I have him on my desktop background. I just love those boys to pieces! I’m really upset at the moment but I’m trying not to show it. I’m trying to be strong even though I’m the opposite of strong.-There are 4 horses at the stables. Merlin, Sebastian, Scooter and a female horse but I don’t know her name. I will definitely give them a pat on the nose for you. Sebastian tried to eat the sleeve of my coat yesterday. Hahahahahaha!-I was having a fantastic weekend until I heard the news about my cousin and his partner splitting up. Never mind. There’ll be other weekends.-I hope you like my badge! I’ve posted it at Andy Capp too but I decided to save you the bus fare to Cappville. LOL.-Hope you are having a better weekend than me.Love you!
Schulz’s father’s barbershop was on the lower floor of the building the Schulz family lived in, too. Selby & Snelling, St. Paul. O’Gara’s Pub, occupying most of the first floor, was still in business when I lived in St. Paul in the ‘80s, and I’ve had my hair cut in that barbershop, though of course it no longer had anything to do with the Schulz family by then.

This is the first time I remember seeing Charlie Brown’s dad’s shop. He hardly talked about him. Cool.

I think Wes Anderson borrowed from or got inspired by this strip in his film Rushmore.

One shouldn’t need to much to be happy, just a hi, a smile, and maybe a chocolate.
