Could be he just used one of those proximity aps they use in stores for deals, that many of the folks in his “target audience” would potentially have on their phones. I give him credit for creativity and a backhanded resume in one.

When you have nothing, everything is expensive and out of reach, and you have no concept of money. I graduated in 1960 with $1 a week allowance – about half what my friends got. When I started work, I often spent very foolishly, because I had no experience handling money, and I think these kids fall into the same catagory.

I remember the summer between my junior and senior year finding a window a/c unit advertised in the paper for $250. My mother about had a stroke, To me, it was just a number, but it was actually about a month of my dad’s salary.

The programs I’ve seen provide second hand phones. With the turnover rate for phones, I’m sure that there are a lot of very nice second hand phones.

I think we have a couple of programs here that either lend or give refurbished cell phones to those who are low income. Basic phone plans. Its a phone.

I got an obama phone while I struggle to get back on my feet. It is a piece of junk Tracphone, no keyboard, no apps, with only 250 minutes/month. It spams me constantly to add minutes at some obscene price. As soon as I can find a full-time job again, it’s getting chucked. I would prefer a vocational training program to a free phone, but beggars can’t be choosers I guess.
