This is something I find surprising – during WWII, the German Army used 2.7 million horses in support of its Blitzkrieg warfare. In 1940, only 16 of its 157 divisions were fully motorized. Not so long ago, the horse was not a luxury, but as much a necessity as a car is today.
I once read that the invention of the combustible engine was the best thing that ever happened for the horse, saving them from most of the abuse and horrors heaped upon them by mankind.

Our milk was still delivered by horse drawn wagons into the mid forty’s .
