Oh I disagree that Charlie Brown should have stayed this way. It was only when he became full of angst and worry that he became the icon he is today. A deeper more realistic character than any most others. One that millions can identify themselves. If he stayed this way we would have never heard of him. He would have been a footnote in comic history rather than one of the best known.
Actually I find that discussion a very interesting and challenging one. It actually sounds like a English PhD thesis, it would be fascinating to track Charlies Brown in terms of the life of Charles Schultz and the society Schultz was living in. I might even purchase a book on that subject and I wonder if somebody already has written such. I know that a book was published on Charlie Brown that showed religion connections which I read but it had the flaws of all one tool explanations in being too simplistic
Though there’s other places he draws his insparation. One time, Charlie Brown’s team lost 40-0. Schultz says that a Little League team he was a part of lost by the same score.
I started to think Shultz was a real jerk (substituted for another word) b/c of the way he demoralized CB…then I heard that CB is an alter ego for Shultz derived from how his wife made him feel.

What, does he need beer goggles so he doesn’t have to half close his eyes?

So Charlie Brown teased the other kids before they began bullying him.

I am very interested to see how Charles Shulz progresses Charlie and the rest of the strip. Looks like Charlie was a normal kid at first.

I think Schulz said something to the effect that the reason he never had Charlie Brown kick the football is because it wouldn’t be funny.

There has to be balance! If there were no losers, there would also be no winners…

Someday you’ll be married with the wife asking, “Honey, does this dress make me look fat?” and you won’t be able to go for laughs.
