Spanking? Now it is called child abuse, & can result in your children be taken away & you put in jail.

    Born in ‘79? You’re just a kid.

Actually, you’re only a little younger than me and depending on when in ’79 a year younger than my baby sister.

Folks really do need to look at what spankings are because contrary to what some try to push (and rather successfully, sadly) spankings don’t have to actually be beatings. How well do time outs really work? I know my baby sister said they never worked on her (we did get spankings and certainly were far from abused) because all they did was put her in a room where she had stuff to entertain herself and allowed her to plan how she could get away with things next time.

Are those selected strips, just to show how much time has changed in 65 years? Because it really looks like it.

Growing up in the 60s, it was known as “getting a lickin’.” My parents seldom actually spanked, though my mother was quick on the draw with the single smack! Her chosen form of punishment was just to make your life miserable until she got over it. Might take an hour or two, might take a week. She never said “you’re grounded”, and never stipulated how long it would go on. You never knew. Personally, I’d have preferred a spanking—a few seconds and it’d be over.

I grew up in the fifties, when spanking was not only just allowed, I think it was the law. Spanked at school and another when I got home because the principal called ahead. Spanked by parents, teachers, aunts, uncles and older cousins. If you went to play at another kid’s house, his mom automatically had spanking rights if you got out of hand. Instead of a criminal as a result, I grew up into a fine man and an honorable career soldier who earned a degree in mathematics.

The fifties were a pretty peaceful time. No school shootings, murder rate was low, we boys were allowed to bring our realistic cap guns to school to play war or cops & robbers or cowboys & Indians. Almost every boy has a small Barlow or other pocket knife on him at all times, including school. We all had access to firearms and marksmanship was taught in high school. Went hunting by the time I was eight. There was no kindergarten but by the end of the first grade we could all read, write and do arithmetic (pluses and minuses). No kid used drugs. Problems were settled between boys with a fistfight and then a handshake when it was over. Boys NEVER hit girls. It just wasn’t done. Boyhood and then manhood did not allow it. The few jerks who grew up to be wife beaters were not tolerated. Cops woulds sometimes remind him of that by not arresting him, but taking him out back and showing him what it felt like.

Spanking stung but it most definitely was not a beating. Adults were careful about that. Also, child molesters seldom lived long in prison, so we had very few of them. If a car rolled up and tried to entice a kid, it seemed like the entire quarter of the state would be mobilized to catch the creep. Parent patrols, all cops called in, even the state militia was sometimes activated for a serious case when the creep tried it at several schools. All kids were taught that if something went wrong, find a cop or a firefighter.

So yeah, I’ll trade spankings for what we have now.

I am convinced that paddle board in the principal’s office saved many a boy from jail or prison time.

I grew up with spankings, although I can only remember being spanked once. The rule with our daughters is: spanking for the worst offenses, with a warning first. The actual spanking was one single “thwak”, bare hand on bare butt. No tools, belts, paddles, etc. We feel what they feel. It’s been years since either of then needed a spanking.

big difference between a quick controlled spanking and loosing your temper and beating someone.

Still a cute cartoon, regardless of the politics of spanking.

Dr. Frederic Wertham was convincing parents of the 50s that kids would become violent torture murderers if allowed to read comic books (including Classics Illustrated and Bugs Bunny). Everybody thinks they’re in the End Times, moralitly-wise.

I remember just one spanking, after I did something dangerous, around 1961–2. If I include corporal punishment at school, maybe a couple more.

The ones I got at home were not so bad. I could cry and scream and try to get away. But at school, I had to take it like a man and concentrate on not crying in front of my classmates. And some of the swats really stung.

I was born in early Fifties. I was spanked at home. Mother used a bolo paddle or an 18-inch ruler, which ever was closer. Father used his belt. I had a fourth grade teacher who would grab you by the shoulders and she would shake you until your teeth rattled.

I’m tired of all the ranting on both sides. Know your kid, do what works for them and shut up about everyone else.

I was spanked as a kid but I turned the tables on them when I was about 6. I laughed when I was being spanked. They couldn’t deal with it so they stopped doing it to me.

I remember many years ago when I was in one of my hardware stores and a youngster was definitely misbehaving! After repeated attempts at whatever she thought was discipline, she said to the kid while pointing at me, “Now you better behave or I’ll have that guy over there spank you!”

I stood there in disbelief for a moment, then walked over to our paint department and picked up a 1 gallon paint stir stick. I then handed the stick to the woman without saying a word, turned and walked away…

When I was 10 in fourth grade I did something that made Coach Cook mad.He was infamous for having a wooden paddle with holes in it(so the meat of your rear would go through it)..I never told mom or dad about that paddle..It might have given them ideas
