I guess some kids find/found Jack in the boxes amusing…in my case I think my mom was trying to teach me not to be scared by things that startled me. Snoop-in-the-box was really cute, so maybe it helped.
I used to have a cat named Alexandra. When Alex was a kitten, she had to face the vacuum cleaner for the first time. I tried to get her to leave the room (my older cat, Rico, wisely did), but she was too curious about what this…this…THING was. So, I turned it on. Alex screamed, jumped about a foot straight up, then ran to find Rico. The second I turned it off, she came flying around the corner, and with a mighty leap, proceeded to try to beat the crud out of the vacuum. To the day she died, every time we opened the closet where the vacuum was kept – even if it was to get a jacket – she would attack it.

I can see that happening around here with a couple of cats and a dog. Thing pops up and all three of them would try to murder it.

Do they still sell jack-in-the-boxes? I used to have a Snoopy one that played Doggy in the Window when you turned the crank. It played backwards too.

Serves you right, Shermy. That really was a mean thing to do to Snoopy!

I think those things are the reason I hate/fear/loathe clowns. Also those ventriloquist’s dummies. Ugh.
